Zeisel in Reach

Eve Zeisel Coffee Table. Designed by Eva Zeisel. Manufactured by Design Within Reach.

Design Within Reach has a simple mandate: take high-end design and make it marketable.

How many other stores can honestly say, “National icon on sale”?

But that’s what DWR is doing this month. Eva Zeisel is highly iconic, having received the National Design Award for Lifetime Achievement from the National Design Museum, Smithsonian, in 2005 - the year before she turned 100. She’s still designing today.

Although she made her mark in ceramics, Zeisel decided to take a turn at tables a few years ago, when she was already in her 90s. She went at it with her usual zest, and her defiantly pre-Bauhaus preference for curvilinear and ornamental form.

“I always live life in the present,” she says. “Eternity is only in the present.”

This coffee table, constructed of black-laquered ash with .5” tempered glass, is most certainly eternal.

But the sale is only in the present: through March 18

He has worked both in building and design, at places such as Barn Raisers, a not-for-profit construction company, and Lunar Logic, a software development firm. Somewhere in his life, he was also a contractor and carpenter. Believe it or not, his lodging history is as varied as his work experience - after living in New York City, Jerusalem, Toronto, Santa Monica and Portland (as in Oregon), he recently moved to the eco-paradise of Powell River, British Columbia, north of Vancouver. He lives by the ocean with his fiance, Lyra, and their cats Navi and Sylvanus.
