Bono is to a Chipotle burrito as you are to Artecnica. Dean Haskell, a senior VP equity researcher at Morgan Joseph, was quoted in the recent Fast Company post Ode to a Burrito saying, “Chipotle has done a wonderful job of meeting people’s sociological need to eat food that’s healthy for the planet.” Talking about their hormone-free and antibiotic-free meats by paralleling Bono’s efforts worldwide.

Reading about social responsibility reminded me of the meeting I had with Artecnica’s co-founders Enrico Bressan and Tahmineh Javanbakht and their line, Design with Consciences. Artecnica has re-collaborated with designers Tord Boontje and Emma Woffenden, of Design with Consciences’ Come Rain Come Shine and tranSglass lines and has produced a ceramics collection and innovative mirror series to be launched during the Salone in Milan.

Artecnica’s mission is to promote, direct, and sponsor collaborative exchanges between leading designers and artisan communities to create meaningful design that challenges people to adopt a deeper, more sensitive way of thinking about objects. More specifically, Design with Conscience executes a high standard of humane working conditions without exploitative child labor and environmentally friendly methods of production.

Design with Conscience also exhibits the following lines: Beads & Pieces, Tatu, and transNeomatic.

“Today’s sophisticated consumer recognizes a need for change. What may once have been a nostalgia for craft is now becoming an appreciation of all that sustainable craft has to offer, including shared work and profit across borders, cultures, races, and religions. The transformation is beginning.” - Artecnica.

Sophie Rivers is simple yet spontaneous. She navigates through foggy city blocks to the beat of old school hip hop, jazz, and Dylan. When decidedly not anti-social, however, trivia and travel consume her. But in the written world of architecture and design at a major publication, she has latched onto an innate clairvoyance using her background in cultural and environmental studies.
