Quin.MGX. Designed by Bathsheba Grossman. Manufactured by Materialise.

When I first saw this lamp by Materialise, there was something very familiar about it, but I couldn’t put my finger on it. I stared longingly at this beautiful lamp and then realized it makes me feel like sitting on the deck of a beach house reading; in fact, it looks like a collection or “family” of intertwining star fish, which together form an exquisite ball. The Quin.MGX was designed by Bathsheba Grossman and it is said to mark the end of a series that has spanned her sculptural life.

The Quintrino is a 12-sided dodecahedron lighting sculpture. It could be confused for a futuristic game piece or a game itself. The different twists and turns make you want to just hold it and admire it. The pendant light is made out of a translucent light nylon material and the sconce is made out of nylon and epoxy, both with multiple holes covering the lamp to allow ample light passage through - the end result truly an experience to cherish. Creating a 3D effect, the Quin creates wondrous shadows and curves. It is available as both a pendant or sconce, but how is one meant to decide? I would want both versions of this fabulous piece of functional art. I can picture the pendant in a bedroom used as a reading light on each side, and the sconce in a dining area. The really impressive part of this lamp is that it is easily maintained, as stains are quickly removed with mere soap and water. Low maintenance, beautiful, and unique; now that’s what I call a lighting fixture.
