At NeoCon: Brillant

Brillant. Designed by Robby e Francesca Cantarutti. Manufactured by JDS.

The Brillant by Robby e Francesca Cantarutti is a gem—literally. Made of transparent, colored polycarbonate, it shines like a faceted gem. In red, the Brillant is a ruby; in blue, a sapphire; in gold, a topaz. Light passes through the Brillant like it travels through glass or plastic or, dare I say it, diamonds.

The chair is chiseled like a finely cut stone—all of its faces create more sheen, more light, more drama. Its shadow alone is like something out of a fairy tale: Donkeyskin’s dress as brilliant as the sun or Rumplestilskin’s spun gold—or Cinderella’s famed slipper. It’s prismatic, like rays trapped in a droplet of water or dew glistening on morning grass. As if its jewel-like style were not enough, the Brillant also offers choices. It is available in four models, with the standard four-legged base (stackable), either rectangular or round; as well as a round metal frame and a 5-rayed spider base (clearly the option for those who seek to indulge at every angle).

JDS International, the manufacturer of Brillant, explains that the design is about “painting the world with the colours of dreams.” This is the Alice in Wonderland dreamscape too—or the chair that ought to have been in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. And though the facets might appear uncomfortable, the Brillant is actually faceted for the body’s comfort, each face angling enough to create the chair’s semi-circular back. The Brillant is also available in opaque nylon—in black or white. These, of course, don’t have the crystalline and streaming transparency, but they are still beautiful—like an onyx cabochon or an ivory tusk.
