Savannah College of Art and Design, SCAD for short, lived up to its motto—“The University for Creative Careers”—with its well-designed, techno-savvy, and eco-friendly booth at #NeoCon09. One of the best-looking exhibition spaces of this year’s show, the SCAD booth highlighted the college’s dual emphasis on furniture and exhibition design; students in the School to Market program organized the space.

Headed by the dapper Italian Antonio Larosa in his navy polka-dot tie, the SCAD booth showcased student-designed pieces. Graduate student Timothy Luscher designed Chrysalis Chair, a lounge chair in stainless steel topped by a vibrant red cushion. The freeform lines of the twisted steel carve out a space for the user. Like the infinity symbol, the manipulated wire has no beginning and no end—instead, it offers a cat’s cradle gone haywire. Each intersection of lines, each pocket of space becomes sculptural. Another interesting piece came from Chia-Wei Sun: Lamp Table, constructed in MDF, capitalizes on contrast, using what was cut out of the table, a lamp shape, to create a second (and third) piece of furniture. Other student work included a glass coffee table bisected by a wavy white form (surfaced in airplane paint) by Jonathan R. Anderson and a white lounge chair with small rubber cylinders in green by Colin Kelly.
