Rosalie de Kruyf’s jewelXLery

Pearls are classic; their overscale version a trendy, more youthful counterpart that you’ve likely seen everywhere from JCrew to Bendels and Barneys and perhaps worn around your own neck. Their popularity has led to their application in interior design. Rosalie de Kruyf’s collection jewelXLery is a fantastically oversized string of pearls which serves as a decorative object for interiors. There is a lamp on the end, and its light playfully dances around the room when it is moved about.

Here’s the catch: in order for it to light up, it has to move about. Thus, this Light Fantasy collection won’t serve as subtle ambient lighting for the dinner table. More suitable for a lively cocktail hour or party, it’s sensor reacts to movement, providing light only when it’s in action. Lit while in motion, unlit while it’s still. In college dorm rooms in particular, it seems that Christmas lights are still in abundance. Hopefully, with the emergence of these new playful options, people will get a bit creative and progress beyond the overused holiday decorations for everyday use. These “pearls” are classier, fun, and encourage activity and involvement. Although I haven’t been able to determine the actual material, I think it goes without saying that these pieces aren’t actual pearls.

Rosalie de Kruyf is an industrial designer who is primarily interested in interior products. She established her own design studio in 2009, with a product collection very conceptually based. “I still want to believe that anything is possible”, she explains. Rosalie de Kruyf is inspired by the way children view the world, ignorant of the complexities of life and excited by its small offerings. She says that Light Fantasy is a collection in which surprises, enlargement and fantasy are central.
