NYCxDesign: Another Kind of Lava Lamp
Foscarini is rolling out new lighting this year at NYCxDesign, including a series of suspension lamps made of sustainable lava stone from Mt. Vesuvius. Filicudi, Panarea, and Alicudi, named after the Aeolian Islands, are lava lamps, but not the retro, psychedelic lava lamps you might be thinking of.

These, which celebrate volcanic charisma, have been dreamed up by father and son design duo, Franceso and Alberto Meda.

“Unlike marble,” Francesco Meda says, “lava is not quarried. It is gathered directly from the mountain. After an eruption the magma settles, becoming part of the terrain and forming blocks of lavic stone that can be crafted. The cutting process generates a large quantity of surplus chips, which we wanted to salvage. The results are lamps in recycled lava, with a warm surface varied by porosity and craters.”

These suspended luminaires are reverent of the rugged beauty of lava.

From left to right (below), Alicudi suggests the tip of a pen with an additional indentation. Panarea appears as a pyramid with ridges. Filicudi resembles the fortune-telling Magic 8 Ball.

Every lamp is unique in its variegated porous surface and crater marks.
