NYCxDESIGN: Liminal Luxury
Stone, metal, wood. These materials create an aesthetic of simplicity, originality, and elemental calm. They’re also the components of Patrticia Urquiola’s new “The Small Hours,” bath collection, shown this week at NYCxDESIGN.

Urquiola says tat the collection conveys “that special atmosphere of dawn, that intimate moment of reflection that offers a mental and physical type of refuge, just before the world wakes up.” Stark yet invigorating, simple yet rife with architercural interest, Urquiola’s Small Hours is sublime in function and in form, yet also offers a blank canvas for daybreak contemplation.

The collection embraces the holistic. With its palette of steel, wood, and stone, Small Hours showcases the interacton and intersection of diverse materials while emphasizing the cylindrical washbasin as central focus.

This distinctive shape is both highlighted and counterposed by accompanying elements: the rigid lines of steel splashbacks and shelving and the illuminated nimbus of circular mirrors.

The round tub is a particular standout. Bathed in a diffuse light emanating from the fixture above, the tub is lined in steel, surfaced in stone, and caressed by a stone platform for easy entry and exit. The circular shapes contrast with the geometric in beautiful symmetry. A small wooden rectangular cabinet completes the setting.

The elements of Small hours lack fancy adornment; they exist to do what they are meant to do: cleanse, relax the body, and calm the mind.
