Fern’s Closed Loop

Fern’s Closed Loop

The plastic on the Fern ergonomic chair from Haworth is something special. It’s now a fully closed loop, meaning any plastic remaining during Fern’s production is put directly back into new chairs—not a bit of waste leftover.

This process of a true “closed loop” is a first in the furniture industry. It marks progress towards Haworth’s circular economy and net zero goals.

Haworth partnered with Royal Technologies and PADNOS for this milestone.

Royal Technologies is a custom thermoplastic molding manufacturer and PADNOS is a 4th generation company known for transforming paper, plastic, metal, and other scraps into reusable resources.

“We were able to move from a process deemed not possible to a true closed-loop breakthrough with incredible teamwork from Royal Technologies and PADNOS,” said Katie Chapman, Haworth Senior Sustainability Engineer.

Fern is inspired by the natural flexibility of a fern frond. The chair moves with you thanks to its Wave Suspension System. This ergonomic chair mimics the human spine and evenly distributes weight to relieve pressure.
