Gel Blocks and Chill

Gel Blocks and Chill

Like a popsicle for your spine, the Soft Cell Lounge Chair oozes cool in every shade. Via Blackman Cruz, this experimental piece from Werner Aisslinger feels both clinical and seductive—equal parts science lab and sunroom. Its gridded gel packs (in hues from whiskey to glacier) call to mind vintage glass bricks. Transparent but not fragile. Soft but not shapeless.

Originally inspired by bike seat technology, only two prototypes were ever made. That rarity might explain why it feels so… mythic. There’s a mad scientist vibe here. Like someone tried to reinvent comfort using nothing but recycled IV bags and optimism.

Would it feel squishy? Slick? Maybe like napping on cold pudding? We don’t know—and we love it more because of that.

This would slay in a Palm Springs atrium or as the lone sculpture in a concrete loft.
