Playful Furniture with a Sketchbook Edge

Playful Furniture with a Sketchbook Edge

Finnish designer Hanna Anonen brings a fresh take on process-driven design with Doodle – The Joy of Sketching and Coloring, unveiled during Helsinki Design Week. The collection translates the immediacy of sketchbook marks into plywood furniture, allowing the raw energy of a line to define the final object.

Each piece is coated in oversized scribbles, bold, imperfect, and full of momentum. The effect is deliberate: the stage usually hidden from view becomes the finished work. By doing so, Anonen emphasizes that the beginnings of an idea can be just as powerful as the end result.

The furniture itself is simple in form, with tables, shelving, and modular units, yet striking in execution. Flat planes of plywood create clean geometries while the printed surfaces disrupt any sense of polish. The result is both functional and unapologetically expressive, a tension that feels especially relevant for designers working in communal and creative settings. Imagine these pieces in a hotel lobby or co-working lounge where personality counts as much as performance.

This project also nods to a broader culture of experimentation. Like Kvadrat’s exploration of textile innovation at 3 Days of Design, Anonen’s collection demonstrates how embracing imperfection can yield an entirely new design language.

In a field that often prizes refinement, Doodle insists that honesty and immediacy are just as valuable. For specifiers, it is a reminder that playful furniture design is not frivolous, but another tool for shaping spaces that feel alive.
