Alicudi, Filicudi, & Panarea: Recycled Lava Lamps by Foscarini

Meet literal lava lamps by Foscarini—Alicudi, Filicudi, and Panarea. Named after three of the seven Italian islands in the Aeolian Archipelago, the trio of suspension lamps is inspired by the “charisma of their volcanic origin.”

Made from waste material typically discarded during lavic stone harvesting, these matte black lamps retain the beauty of lava with the material’s signature texture, but they gain an advantage due to their sustainable construction. As Foscarini notes, “The unusual patented material utilized for this collection is the outcome of an innovative process. The use of recycled lava makes it possible to obtain small thicknesses, up to 8 – 10 mm, while preserving the strength and expressive impact of natural lava.”

Designed by father and son duo Alberto and Francesco Meda, the three luminaires—Alucudi, Filicudi, and Panarea—display expressive shapes inspired by the liquid and solid states of lava (lava refers to both). Alicudi takes the form of a sinuous cone. Filicudi is a planetary sphere. And Panarea resembles a melting pyramid. All three lamps pay tribute to the earth, its volcanic craters, and the liquid magma released during eruptions.

Alberto Meda, who is one of Foscarini’s Art Directors, is the perfect co-designer for this small collection, which is a “project that combines research, aesthetics and sustainability, marking a further step forward in the experimentation with surprising materials for the world of lighting.”
