Playful Storage Design in Technicolor Layers

Playful Storage Design in Technicolor Layers

Some storage units stand politely against the wall. Others, like the Stack Storage Unit from Established & Sons, treat playful storage design as an invitation to misbehave. It turns the familiar chest of drawers into something closer to a provocation.

Designed by Shay Alkalay & Raw-Edges, Stack leans hard into visual imbalance. Drawers jut, cantilever, and hover, creating a sense of motion more often associated with installation art than casegoods. That tension is intentional. It introduces energy into a category built on order, giving playful storage design a quietly defiant edge.

Color does much of the heavy lifting. From saturated greens (pictured here) and bold reds to cooler blues, softer sage tones, and a pared-back wood veneer, each palette shifts the mood without softening the attitude. The composition reads vertically, almost architecturally, making this feel like layered storage rather than a static object.

In commercial interiors, Stack works as both functional storage and visual punctuation, anchoring lobbies, creative offices, or hospitality suites where expressive furniture is part of the experience. Designers already drawn to Established & Sons’ expressive work, like the Filigrana lighting, will recognize the same instinct for color, movement, and controlled chaos.
