Islands, Not Sections

The best time to look at outdoor furniture is usually the wrong season. When it’s cold, gray, and entirely uninviting outside, the idea of generous outdoor seating becomes less practical and more aspirational. That’s exactly where MDEAR by DEDON lands best: as a reminder of warmer spaces, slower time, and furniture designed to be lingered in. First shown at Salone del Mobile 2025, the collection feels like something worth revisiting.

Designed by Sebastian Herkner, MDEAR introduces a modular approach that favors flow over structure. The collection is composed of five organic seating forms that can stand alone or combine into larger arrangements. Instead of rigid geometry, the shapes feel rounded and intuitive, encouraging layouts that evolve naturally rather than lock into place.

DEDON’s weaving expertise does much of the work here. A tight, structured weave grounds the seat, while a more open pattern at the back introduces air and visual lightness. Herkner scaled up the familiar MBRACE weave, creating a surface that feels both recognizable and newly expressive. The craftsmanship is evident, but never overstated.

What makes MDEAR especially compelling is how it behaves once arranged. The modules do not read as parts of a system. They read as a whole. A single piece feels resolved, while larger groupings unfold smoothly, without visual breaks or hierarchy.

MDEAR aligns with a broader shift toward outdoor furniture that emphasizes comfort and atmosphere, a sensibility echoed in this recent 3rings roundup. Even viewed from the depths of winter, it offers a convincing argument for slower, warmer days.
