There’s something instinctive about the way the Shell Lounge Chair from Branca gathers around the body. Now released in a striking black edition, the sculptural seat reveals why it stands out among today’s statement lounge chairs. A ring of wooden ribs arcs outward, forming a protective shell that feels both structural and surprisingly soft.

The structure reads almost skeletal. Curved timber ribs radiate outward like a vertebrae system, creating a frame that both supports and defines the seat. In black, the geometry becomes more graphic. Light catches the wood grain and emphasizes every curve.

Inside that structure sits a surprisingly relaxed interior. Long cylindrical cushions stack and shift within the frame, forming what the designer describes as a “pillow container.” The seat adapts slightly to each sitter, allowing the comfort to feel casual rather than engineered.

As statement lounge chairs go, this one holds presence without shouting. The open frame keeps it visually light, even with the bold silhouette. It’s easy to imagine it anchoring a hotel lobby corner, a gallery waiting area, or a design-forward reception lounge.
