Carpet Edition works in wool, to measure, and mostly for specifiers. Its two newest rugs, both from the duo lualdimeraldi, take water as their subject. Reef reads stone. Tide reads sand. Neither leans on pattern. Both lean on pile height.

Reef has no straight edges. The hand-tufted rug breaks into interlocking circles, ovals, and polygons, each field set at a different height. Stones dropped by the sea and left to settle. Soft borders. Rounded corners. Light does the rest, pooling in the low areas, catching on the raised ones.

Tide works the other way. Hand-woven, with relief lines in New Zealand wool over an Indian wool base, it takes after ripple marks. The lines lift and sink across the surface. Stand at one end and the whole thing seems to be pulling back, like water retreating on wet sand.

Both land in neutrals. Lunar Gravel for Reef, Quite Sand for Tide.

These are organic shaped rugs that hold a floor without arguing with the architecture above them. A lounge grouping in a boutique hotel. A reception where warmth is the only thing missing. Carpet Edition has been working this register a while, as with its Nomad collection, grounded by texture rather than by print.
