Foscarini handed its lamps to multimedia artist David Szauder and got back a corps de ballet. His contribution to the brand’s What’s in a Lamp? series takes its title, Ballet Mécanique, from Fernand Léger.

The wire rods of Allegro become bodices and tutus. A pendant canopy stands in for a head. Orbital’s colored glass discs fan out like a showgirl’s headdress, floodlighting a mannequin in a pink vest.

Szauder builds these scenes with generative AI, but not by typing prompts. He layers his own images to push the machine off its default habits. What comes out feels familiar, with one detail quietly wrong.

That tension is useful to designers. Decorative lighting with this much character reads as a performer first and a light source second. Picture Allegro above a boutique hotel lobby, or a cluster of Orbital lamps in a theater bar, doing double duty as statement lighting and conversation starter.

An earlier entry in the series approached the lamp through illustration as dialogue. Szauder skips the page and goes straight to choreography. The lamp still gets top billing.
