Old Skool at Milan

Can a simple shoe inspire a sublime symphony of sight and sound?

It can if it’s Vans Old Skool 36 FM by Off the Wall—even more so if the designer is Willo Perron (of the display, not the shoe).

Perron is responsible for the exuberant extravaganza that unsuspecting attendees were subject to when they entered “Checkered Future,” a cavernous, mirror-bedecked space fitted out with massive criss-crossing posts and girders and a central viewing platform to experience the show.

Both the architecture and the display of light and sound are homages to the shoe: the former recalls the classic checkerboard pattern, and the latter evokes the new design on the midsole and outsoul—an extended oscillation that recalls a sound wave.

The light display varied with the intensity and frequency of the sound/music, making for an interactive immersion that references the intersections of culture, music, and fashion: “an experience highlighting Van’s global influence and commitment to innovation at the intersection of culture and industry.”
