Quiet Mass Strong Presence

Quiet Mass Strong Presence

The Tarang Chair, from Kelly Wearstler in collaboration with Æquo Gallery, is the kind of sculptural lounge seating that establishes a room’s center of gravity without asking for permission. Hand-carved from teak and finished with a burn that deepens the grain, the chair feels composed and intentional from every angle.

Its form is compact, but its presence is not. An arched base supports a gently contoured seat and low back, creating a sense of calm containment rather than sprawl. Bronze accents trace the silhouette with restraint, catching light in small moments and emphasizing the chair’s sculptural edges. The contrast between darkened wood and warm metal gives the piece a quiet tension that reads as deliberate, not decorative.

Tarang isn’t about comfort in the traditional sense. It’s about intention. Specified sparingly, it brings visual weight and material clarity to spaces that need a single, decisive note rather than another soft place to sit.

For designers drawn to furniture with material confidence and expressive restraint, the chair sits comfortably alongside other explorations of form-forward craft, including this recent look at Kelly Weartsler’s sculptural woodwork.
