Timbra: Kelly Wearstler’s Piano in Layers of Birch

Timbra: Kelly Wearstler’s Piano in Layers of Birch

A piano is usually an instrument first, object second. Kelly Wearstler flips that hierarchy.

With Timbra, created in collaboration with Edelweiss, the piano becomes something entirely unexpected. Layers of birch veneer sweep across the form in fluid ribbons, exposing rings of grain that read like topographic lines. As a result, the piece feels less like furniture and more like a carved landscape. You can explore it further on .

The sculptural piano design begins with Edelweiss’ compact round piano but pushes the form somewhere far more expressive. The rim dissolves. Edges soften. Laminated birch builds gentle topography that recalls wind-shaped dunes or the frozen movement of soundwaves.

It’s an extraordinary piece of design. Here, the grain becomes part of the architecture. Rings of birch wrap the instrument in motion, turning what could have been a simple casing into something almost landscape-like.

Each piano is handcrafted in Cambridge by Edelweiss, whose atelier balances advanced technology with meticulous instrument making. As a result, the instrument suits intimate rooms, delivering a warm, atmospheric sound that fills a space without overwhelming it.

Wearstler has long explored how material can shape sculptural objects, as seen in Coastal Grain, Cut Sharp. With Timbra, that instinct extends to music itself.
