The Gaines Comfort Sleeper opens with zero clearance behind it. Push it flat against a wall and the bed still comes out.

Urban Natural Home carries it and moves to a larger showroom in Montclair, NJ this September. The clearance detail matters more than it sounds. Sleeper sofas usually demand a float of a foot or more, which is exactly the floor area a studio or a guest suite doesn’t have.

Gaines also comes apart. Arms, back, base. Enough to clear a narrow hallway, a tight stair turn, a prewar doorway. Anyone who has measured a freight elevator before ordering upholstery knows what that is worth.

The silhouette is a roll arm, softened and traced with embroidery along the front curve. Open, the arms stay put and flank the mattress. It reads as furniture, not a cot on a frame.

The platform mechanism carries a true 80-inch sleeping surface, eight inches more than a standard pullout. Three mattress builds are offered, topping out at Tempur-Pedic.

Milano Bedding’s Kirk solved the same problem by opening sideways. Gaines just refuses to move at all.
